A wonderful Byrd Fest to set off the anniversary year. I greatly enjoyed the whole as a musical treat and an act of worship. Thank you.

Not exactly the New College of yesteryear but I share jonfan’s overall enthusiasm.

Not by me either. Byrd's Great Service is wonderful....but all that Robert Quinney wrote about it in advance (see post#2) didn't seem to be in evidence.
I had intended not to be picky about this (thankfully) live CE, but the effect that came over on my sound system was of some rather high-powered back desk members dominating very straight front desk ditto. The chamber organ, although not in any way drowning the choir, seemed somewhat forward in the sound engineering, and became, to me, somewhat tiresome to the ear. No offence intended to the excellent player.

I must have been in the mood for Byrd yesterday. I didn’t listen to the broadcast on my best system but it was satisfying to me.

I'm always in the mood for Byrd. His Lullaby with viols always always brings tears

                      Yup, here too!

.......but, here we go: a QUESTION: how DOES a DOM make his her / trebles sound as distinctively as eg GG did at John's?

Just playing NCO's double CD of Monteverdi's Vespers through our best sound system. It is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL and sounds like a different choir from Wednesday's CE. Truly inspiring. One cannot know, of course, but one is tempted to think it might have some characteristics of Monteverdi's own Venetian choir.

I'm curious: how could one (re-)obtain the New College of yesteryear? By bringing Edward Higginbottom out of retirement, perhaps?

I expect most will have understood what I meant.
