Does anyone remember the rather good broadcasts from Blackburn Cathedral when John Bertalot was at the helm? All live, of course in those days.

Those were before I was born!

Blackburn are busy this year. Midnight Mass live on BBC One on Christmas Eve with the Blackburn Cathedral Chorus, and (presumably recorded) Christmas Day Worship the following morning with the Cathedral Choir.

Yes - but they weren't all live. The BBC used to get it's money's worth from the visit by doing a live broadcast and then putting one "in the can" for broadcast later in the year.

One of the choirmen told me about one such occasion. After the live broadcast, the choir retired for refreshments before returning to the stalls to record an evensong for (I think) the Easter season. When they processed in for the recording, the choir were amused to find that the vergers had changed the hangings to gold ones.

Christmas Day is also live; Choral Evensong is a pre-record rather than live simply due to the BBC1 broadcasts.
