Trinity College Choir, Cambridge - Michaelmas Term 2022

    .
Choral services resume this evening at 6.15 pm with a Service of Commemoration to give thanks for the life of HMQ Elizabeth II.

Details of this term’s services and music:

Live stream from their YouTube page:
Voted the fifth best choir in the world in Gramophone magazine’s ‘20 Greatest Choirs’, the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge comprises around thirty Choral Scholars and two Organ Scholars, all of whom are students at the University. During term the Choir’s main focus is the singing of the liturgy in the College Chapel; outside term, the Choir gives regular concert performances, notably BBC broadcasts of Bach’s Mass in B Minor and Christmas Oratorio with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and tours internationally. The Choir’s extensive discography includes Howells’ Collegium Regale, which won Australia’s Limelight Recording of the Year in 2016; Howells’ Requiem & other works, which won a Gramophone Award in 2012; and Beyond All Mortal Dreams, settings of contemporary American a cappella music, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the same year.

    Enjoy!

The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge performs the Nunc Dimittis from the St Paul's Service by Herbert Howells (1892-1983).Stephen Layton - Director of Musi...

A delectable version of the Nunc dimittis from Howells' St Paul's Service. I suspect it's not possible to do more than a couple of takes at this intensity.
Trinity occasionally issue on YouTube specially made videos; worth looking out for.

        .
A new development this term has been to webcast live in sound and vision all services from Trinity College Chapel sung by the full choir, whereas weekday services were previously audio only.

Next Sunday is Remembrance Sunday, when Trinity will, unusually, sing a Mattins Service at 10.55 including the Te Deum from Collegium Regale (Howells) and They shall grow not old (Guest).

The Duruflé Requiem will be sung on Sunday evening at the regular time of 18.15. This is likely to be exceptionally fine since the choir recorded the work in Ste-Eustache, Paris this summer. Comparison could also be made with their previous live account at the beginning of Michaelmas Term 2020.

Another date for the diary is the Trinity College Advent Carol Service on 27th November at 18.15, following on comfortably from Andrew Nethingha's final Advent Carol Service at St John's.

Of interest to psalm nerds; an extract from a live Evensong showing Trinity's special way of delivery. Everything is at the service of the text.

A contrast to St John's with a link to the Carol Service at Trinity plus the service booklet. The only minus point is what must be the noisiest assembling of a congregation on the planet, while the excellent organ scholars played a half hour of Bach!
A wonderful spectacle of a packed candlelit chapel with a superb service to go with it. Did I recognise the owner of the stunning opening solo, K, in the Responsory?

However, a recent address there (presumably not at the service jonfan is talking about, though this article is in today's Times) seems to have left some of the congregation in tears, to me an astounding reaction.

Watch the whole service with the sermon about 70 miinutes in. It's not obvious that anyone was in tears; I'm sure the students coped. IMHO the preacher went out of his way to shock; he sounded silly.
More to the liking of Forum members are the Leighton anthem and Stanford Canticles. Stunning singing as always.

Excellent, thanks for the YT link

Agreed though, it sounds like a football crowd off-camera during the introductory Bach
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                            You did.

The feeling of being able to join in the service, whilst not in situ, is so much enhanced by Trinity’s video coverage compared to the audio only of the St John’s broadcast.
