Horrible electronic noise, right from the outset.

Reminds me of the remark made by a Dutch organist that something which pretends to be something else should have no place in Christian worship. I know that an organ or any musical instrument is only a means to an end, but a prestigious venue as the chapel at Lambeth Palace surely deserves something more authentic (as does the Sheldonian theatre!).

Agree. According to the NPOR (https://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=G00265), when the (pipe) organ was last surveyed in as long ago as 1996 it was deemed to be in a bad state of repair. It seems that, either temporarily or permanently, the chapel now has a poor-sounding electronic.

I believe it's a Viscount. I only heard the end but it sounded particularly nasty I agree.

In these days when, to put aside the debate between digital and pipe organs, the quality of, for example, the Hauptwerk software is so impressive, a lot of more 'traditional' digital organs using older technology do really show their frailties and crude natures.

First class singing with a music choice definately not run of the mill.
PS. No doubt Lambeth Palace will willingly accept donations that contribute to the cost of repair to the organ; in the mean time they do their considerable best.

... their considerable best? Imported choir? How is that Lambeth Palace doing its best?

They could just as well have found a place with a better organ, and if the A B of C had felt like trailing along and waffling as he did he could have done so, I'm sure he has transport.

Personally I wonder why it was felt necessary to do a broadcast from a venue with a rubbish organ just to co-incide with a rather irrelevant conference. Maybe the A B of C feels he needs to make up for the C of E's Covid debacle.

I assume from your response that you are not a member of the C of E. This ‘irrelevant conference’ happens every decade where all the bishops of the Anglican Communion gather at Lambeth Palace to discuss church matters and global issues. I think the Archbishop thought it important to hold the CE in the Palace itself as that’s where the conference is about to take place. It would have been quite easy to hold the CE at St Martin’s but the singers were thrilled and honoured to be taking part at the Palace despite the inadequate organ. I’m not sure what you mean by the ‘C of E’s Covid debacle’. I think they coped as well as any other organisation.

The original conferences took place in Lambeth. This year's - like those of more recent times - are held in Canterbury, hosted by the cathedral and university.

Thanks for clarification Peanut. How stupid of me to assume the Lambeth Conference is held in Lambeth. Mind you I used to think the Derby was held in Derby.

The AoC evidently now has his own chapel, but did he ever have his own choir? Back in the day the likes of Cardinal Wolsey and Lady Margaret Beaufort had household choirs that rivaled the Chapel Royal...

Yes. At least, William Warham did.

So why not a broadcast CE from Canterbury Cathedral? A live one, even?
