Very tiny Q: St Alban's Abbey has a fine choir under Mr Lucas, so why does such a feast not get recorded from their choir?

      Good question.

Having said that I like the look of the service list EXCEPT for that old pot-boiler Harwood in A flat....one of my pet hates. It seems worse every time I hear/sing it.

It got an emotional outing when the erstwhile Punctator of Exeter sang the solo not long ago at an old choristers Evensong. You may even have been present, ardcarp. Unfortunately, it’s sometimes given to a choral scholar with Pavarotti-like pretensions.

Give it a rest ardcarp (re Harwood), Unless you can write something better.

(Sorry, but it does get a bit repetitive your knocking some of the best loved - albeit well-worn - parts of the repertory).

Sorry! Just an opinion, and the Forum is a place for opinions! I do admire many 'well-worn' favourites, e.g. Stanford in B flat, which is another go-to set of canticles which choirmasters fall back on because everyone knows them so well. Shame, incidentally, that the Te Deum in B flat is so seldom heard on the radio. Truly symphonic in its construction.

I am surely right that Victoria would never have had girls/women singing top line in services?
Now, if I AM right, then why, so far, have we had NO boys recorded singing top lines at all?

After all TdeV was a chorister himself!!

You'll have to dig out the old recording of George Malcolm/Westminster Cathedral/Victoria's Responsories for Tenebrae!

No doubt. Thankfully, the last time I sang it (at St Paul's under John Scott, I am pretty sure!) the solo was very faithfully rendered as per the score: piano, crescendo to the espressivo A flat. I don't mind it, and I am sure it's core rep. for the Rugby choir. When did it last have an outing?

I wish students would look as closely at what the composer wrote and thereby give the music a chance!

There are also two classic Victoria discs in the St John’s/George Guest Argo box (though not the Tenebrae Responsories).

                              Quite! It’s a good start.
