As already mentioned in the Francis Jackson thread (http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...kson-1917-2022), I shall be there and would be happy to go for a drink/chat afterwards: PM me if you'll be around and would like to meet up.

If I may, I'd like to give a plug for the choir's 2019 CD release, Beatam (available from the Minster shop and other places):

Beatam Beatam CD, The Choir of York Minster, Benjamin Morris organ, Robert Sharpe Director. Three Introits – Edward Cuthbert Bairstow 1. I sat down under His shadow 1:25 2. Jesu, the very thought of Thee 2:10 3. I will wash my hands in innocency 1:26 4. Benedicite in G – Francis Jackson 6:46 5. Remember for good, O Father – […]

Not only does it include Jackson in G and the anthem Audi, filia, it also has premiere recordings (made in January/February 2018) of Judith Bingham's York Service and Philip Moore's The spacious firmament, which featured in their live June 2018 broadcast (the one in which the electricity cut out and the anthem had to be recorded later for insertion into the Sunday repeat). Of course the organ has been renovated since then (ardcarp will, I know, be posting details of the new specification in the usual place later) and should sound even cleaner and brighter than on the CD. I hope that it comes across well and that the (BBC?) engineers do a good job.

So glad that Mr Sharpe has chosen to broadcast on a 15th evening. The dramatic Ps 78 usually lasts for a quater of an hour or so.
'The Doctor' should be listening from on high.

Terrific - admit it, we all secretly hope for a cheesy a use of the 32 ft reed on 'hot thunderbolts'!

Imagine Ben Morris's dilemma if he reads this before 4pm......

Very many years ago (!) I accompanied the school choir in Schubert's Hark, hark the lark on the organ in Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool one speech day. I mischievously used a lower reed for two notes (a cuckoo?). The music master was not amused, but I think the parents enjoyed it.

Great evensong, enthusiastically sung. I've always thought Jackson in G canticles are a wonderful set. Never heard Audi, filia before, but loved that too. Jackson not afraid to vary the texture, ie not SATB all through, and it gives the organ a good showing.

Yes, excellent service. Wonderful to hear Psalm 78 in full. Interesting use of the Mann quadruple chant which appears on and off throughout. St T NYC also used to have this for the beginning but not recurring IIRC.

It was certainly thrilling to be there in person, and I'm glad that the broadcast seems to have come over well.

We were given an introductory welcome and explanation before the broadcast, in which one of the points made was that the creed would, unusually, be sung, as apparently it was in FJ's time. This then left the congregation with only about 6 Amens to join in with, since there was no hymn, but at no point did this seem like a concert or recital: it was a very moving tribute, and it was very efficiently and effectively carried out. Sincere thanks to all concerned.

The top line was a mixture of 23 boys and girls (all Seniors, according to the chorister parent I sat next to): and boy (girl?), could they sing!!
I thought that the psalm was exceptional: we were taken on a real narrative, with interesting choices of chants and organ registration; yes, the stalls shook at times!

All the more reason for being pleased that we decided to retire to York: to have this quality of singing (to say nothing of their repertoire: Imogen Holst Mass tonight for Corpus Christi) just a short cycle ride away is indeed something to gladden the heart and lift despondent spirits.

The York choir are certainly established as one of the UK’s best. Perhaps it’s just me, but does anyone else find that they’re always a bit on the loud side, with little contras? (I regularly listen to their YouTube broadcasts). Often sounds very “shouty”, particularly from the back row.

There was certainly contrast in Ps 78, and it didn't occur to me that it was lacking elsewhere...fine in Jackson in G for instance. It's always much better to be there in person, so maybe Pulcs is the best judge of this.
