    Easter from Kings BBC2

Did anyone watch? I was glad they included Hosanna to the Son of David by my old friend Arthur Hutchings. He had no aspirations to greatness or originality as a composer. The simple effectiveness of this and other pieces by him are somewhat in contrast to his apparently combative personality as a Prof of Music! Deep down he was a sensitive soul. His music is not often heard, so thanks Kings and DH for singing this.

Music and readings for Holy Week and Easter from the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge.

Matthew Martin was accompanying the service, I think.

Why not the current organ scholar(s)?

They may have been self-isolating when this recording was made.

Excellent singing I thought and good to have seldom heard items, the Hutchings and Elgar in particular. I should imagine that this was recorded near the Christmas programme, in which case a big learn for the choristers who looked and sounded fresh and enthusiastic.

Wasn't it recorded in December 2021? I thought KCC choir were functioning normally again by then?

If I recall posts on here correctly from the time of the Christmas Eve service, I believe that as Chapel services had only recommenced in October 2021, the decision was taken to have the more experienced Matthew Martin at the organ console for the three big occasions during December.

Perhaps someone with better knowledge can confirm?

Oh - could be. I thought that was in 2020 though?

Yes I thought so. The organ student/s played for the Nine Lessons in 2021.

Apologies, you are correct. It was indeed 2020. Can't believe how quickly time goes by!

Yes it was, I was there. In the printed service booklet which I have, Matthew Martin is given as the organist (so it clearly wasn’t a last minute thing). We in the congregation had to be masked (as I seem to recall the rules had tightened the previous week - other than for members of the government swigging Dom Perignon in Downing St. of course ) - but otherwise all was as normal.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
