An expressiive full sound from the singers which sounded like the College Choir on their own without the input from the younger singers in the Chapel Choir. I enjpyed the Introit, Responses and Anthem in particular; all given with great clarity and urgent communication. The Canticles lacked the ultimate thrill at the climaxes to my ears and also poor separation beween the two part upper voices in the magical opening of the Magnificat. The greatest pleasure to me in the service was the organ with stunning playing and registration whether accompanying or solo. I was moved to look it up on the National Register.
The sound was clear but there was a high pitched whistle which interfered for about 30 seconds in the Nunc. A thoroughly devotional service as befits the season.

Can you post up details on The Organ sub-section jonfan? I seem to remember there was an older one with a lovely case and 'doors' as well as a more modern instrument... but maybe I'm getting confused. Didn't have time to hear CE today, but will catch up tomorrow.

There are three organs available in the chapel. I should imagine it was the Kuhn instrument used for this service. Link provided on the Organ sub-section.
It was the College Choir that sang yesterday but a CE was recorded on Tuesday with the Chapel and College Choirs combined with music for the Pentecost season.

Got round to listening at last. Well sung, JCC. Being finicky, there was slightly too much spoken word...but after all it's the chaplain's chapel! Tempi were maybe a bit driven. Howell's 'Gloucester' is one of my favourites, and here it was very well sung, but the effect was almost like inspecting it through a microscope. Every detail was clear; a good thing in many ways. But we have the perception of Howells (at least I do) of being spacious, accompanied by Willis/Harrison-type noises and...I hardly dare say this...a bit smudgy and blurred at the edges.

An excellent service with some very fine singing. Although I’m a huge fan of the Gloucester Service’, the organ and the acoustic were never likely to make it a classic performance.
