There's a story about the 'standard' harmonisation of Once in Royal. The original was by Gauntlett, but not as it appears in, for instance CC book 1. When a King's Carol service was looming in the early 1920s, 'Daddy' Mann couldn't find the original. So a choral scholar (actually I think he was a young lay clerk which they had in those days) hummed what he thought was the bass line...starting with B, the now familiar 1st inversion of a G major chord. Daddy Mann duly scribbled out his version of the harmony which became the King's standard and ended up in CC1. This story was told to me by the the bass singer himself, a Mr Derek Hetley, a fine musician and friend of mine who died a while ago now.

This same man continued to sing bass in his local Parish Church choir almost until his death. Latterly he had both legs amputated, but lived very independently (always a bachelor) managing his daily routine with a stair-lift and a wheelchair. On Sunday mornings, two of the boy choristers would bring him to church already cassocked in his wheelchair, rather dangerously as it was downhill. Four choristers were on a rota to wheel him uphill back home. The lads loved the job, and it is one of my best memories seeing Derek hurtling to and from church, cassock flapping. He kept his fine bass voice until the very end...and what a repository of memories went with.

Lovely story! Bass voices often have longevity on their side!

        It wasn't.

Must admit I missed the Willcocks last verse arrangement of 'O Come, all ye faithful' especially that famous organ chord on 'Word (of the Father)'.

I thought that chord had been retained, but was somewhat eclipsed by the continuing descant.

Incidentally, so thought the new descant got off to a good start, but started to wander aimlessly towards the end.

I must be suffering from Carol overload partly from listening to Radio 3 which plays far too much Christmas music . Maybe it was an hallucination?
There was however, to your earlier post , a rather good Sally Beamish Carol which would be an entry on my Now-That’s-What -I-Call- A-Christmas-Carol-Competition…

Not King’s finest year either for repertoire or execution. I extend the general welcome for Sally Beamish’s Carol. Two or three carols were wrecked by Daniel Hyde’s over-fast tempi. I felt Cecilia McDowall’s new setting was more Motet than Carol.I enjoyed Hyde’s command over blend and balance and his Choir’s ability to execute finely graduated rallentandi was wonderful. Its consistent failure to use terminal ‘t’s in “Silent nigh…, holy nigh…, was, to me an irritant.

Because it was like a Curate’s Egg, this year’s Service will not live long in my memory.

I will be listening on R3 during protracted Turkey preparation while the others go on a rainswept Christmas walk. This may colour my opinion. However after 3 weeks of a certain Carol competition I suspect this will come as a blessed relief…

Strange that in the previous two years, people here were praising DH’s slower tempi and bemoaning SC’s excessive speed.

A wonderful service, and as to the terminal Ts I often hear in various other places these days that Mary’s spit hath rejoiced, so I’m grateful that the focus appears to be elsewhere.

A schooner of half-decent sherry will help the process on I’m sure!

The current rain in the soggy South West demands it!

Indeed - most un Christmas-like weather - should be sunny and crisp!

It appears the Radio 3 repeat has been delayed . They are now filling with the winner of the R3 Carol competition complete with “inappropriate “ blue note * as another forumite acutely observed. At this rate the Sherry bottle will be drained ….

*On third i in words “Love Div-i-i-ine….”

Nit-picking aside, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without King's...so, pausing from the job which is within my pay-grade ....doing the pickled cabbage....may I wish one and all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS.
