There is no news on a replacement for Oliver Waterer? Simon Pearce has started the new season as acting director.

Is it public why he's moved to Selby, other than that wonderful old Hill instrument? Not seeking goss!

I only heard it from the Nunc onwards. It was a pleasing CE, I thought. The organ balance was maybe a bit overwhelming to the trebles in the Nunc, but fine in the hymn. Enjoyed the Flor Peeters voluntary.

Do I gather there is to be a new time, 4pm, for future evensong broadcasts?

Seems like it though the October BBC Music Mag has 3.30pm throughout the month. 4pm a more Evensong time and I think it used to be that. Any earlier and it would be Noonsong!
A thrilling final voluntary played with panache by SP.
A beautifully sung service with plenty of detailed pointing of text and mood. The Rachmaninov was a carefully paced performance with a rich climax before easing away at the end. Plenty of word painting and dynamic contrasts in the psalms. In the canticles I worried that one of the tenors had made the ultimate sacrifice at the end of the Gloria [it happened both times so presumably he survived!]
Loved the anthem and hymns; thank you St Davids.

It was mentioned at the close; also next week's Radio Times. The impression from the announcement was that this was a change going forward.

Yes - just checked ahead - at least next two CEs are 4 p.m.
                  Good.

                  Thx.

CE was at 4pm for much of its history, although the regular broadcast time has varied from 3pm to 8pm. I’m sure there are many practical and programming considerations.

Agreed. Getting kid choristers out of school maybe?

Coincidence that this week's CotW is Rach. Hearing part of his Vespers in today's episode sent me back to St David's CE. Introit beautfully sung. In fact the dynamnic control of the choir in this and in much of the service, including the Psalms, was superb.

I very much enjoyed this Evensong. That Crotch chant really is the perfect match for psalms 42 and 43. I think it was Hylton Stewart who first made that inspired pairing. And an extra brownie point for resisting the temptation to spoil the refrains with Farghburdons.

In fact, it's varied from 3pm to 10.30pm (Sunday evenings from January 1988 - July 1989)

FOLLOWING a rigorous selection process, the Dean and Chapter of St Davids Cathedral have appointed Mr Simon Pearce as the new Organist and Master of the Choristers, or Director of Music as the post is also known. Simon has been Assistant Director of Music at St Davids since 1998, playing for many TV and radio broadcasts, as well as Royal […]

Not sure why this took so long. Very well deserved.
