The anthem, hymn and voluntary the best bits, the rest rather underwhelming I’m afraid.

When the newly composed Canticles arrived in Truro, it quickly became apparent that the composer had forgotten to include the Gloria. Somewhat static blocks of sound were created to fill the voids. Not particularly sophisticated, but effective in its way in situ.

Evening Hymn is such an indulgent Edwardian treat, especially when the altos get going in the Amen.

The composer seems to have forgotten not only the Gloria, but also the correct Latin spelling (those bysillabes treated as they were dyphtongs...).

Yes, it all seemed a bit weird at first. The music Dobrinka wrote for us with orchestral accompaniment (Kynance Cove, Regent CD) was more successful, I think.

I'm aware of several descants to Coe Fen but haven't come across that one before; anyone know the source?

It's quite common for a DoM to pen his/her own descant for an occasion. Just a suggestion.

Indeed - in fact the one we use at church was written by our DoM. A few years ago there was an outbreak of (apparently) specially written descants on the Radio 3 evensong broadcasts, often not relating to the rhythm or melody of the tune they were a descant to, or making much musical sense in themselves. This one was better than that, though Coe Fen is not much of a favourite of mine anyway so I'm not that desperate to track it down! I enjoyed the broadcast more than some did, though not the error-strewn continuity introduction today.

...but not to have THAT tuba moment right before the Amen is unforgivable when there is a perfectly serviceable one on the instrument (a Mirabilis, no less)!

Maybe that was the problem! - but it didn't sound at all overbearing in the voluntary. I wonder why we didn't get it? I know that I've said it before and I'm in a minority here, but those Latin words sound so ugly and cold in that anthem. Give me the warmth of the English any time.

Canticles nicely sung, but I shan't be in a hurry to search them out again.

My understanding was that BG intended his anthem to be sung in English and certainly back in the day (80s) it was far more done to English words.

The music is clearly framed to the English words, as I once pontificated elsewhere.
