White, male, and stale. Come on UK cathedrals - buck your ideas up, update your music lists and diversify your composers.

That's a bit harsh, Basil H. For a start St David's Cathedral Choir was probably the first to use girls and men. Secondly, from the past four CE lists, three have featured women composers. (Roxana Panufnik, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Renate Cveckovskis, Stevie Wishart, Joanna Marsh.)

It is inevitable that musical repertoire drawn from, say, 300 years, consists largely of male composers as for most of that time society had a very different attitude to women in all spheres of professional activity. They seem to be making up for it fast. (One of my female contemporaries as a music student made it 'big' as a film composer very soon after graduating.)

Yes, so keep featuring them! I’m not bothered about who started a girls choir first - let’s spice music lists with more diversity. Coll Reg is an excellent piece of music, but pair it with a suitable introit / anthem by Weir, Bingham, McDowell, Wallen, Andrew, Panufnik and then music libraries / lists start to slowly become more diversified and modern.

I agree Basil. You might want to have a look at posts 17 - 19 on the St Pamcras thread.

This would normally be St Davids Festival week, cancelled again, so it is good that their yearly CE broadcast has been restored regardless.
PS. Another CE is being recorded on Tuesday for broadcast on 8 September, including some Rachmaninov, so now at least twice yearly.

Should diversity only be about gender and/or skin colour? Welsh, English, French, Gay, Heterosexual, 19th, 20th, and 21st century composers are all represented here.

Perhaps look for that when things get back to something approaching normal? For now I prefer to be grateful that we are having live CEs broadcast at all and feel that it is more appropriate to temper criticism according to what the circumstances dictate.

I just don’t agree with that. The circumstances at the moment aren’t ideal, but we have hopefully dealt with the worst; this isn’t videos made at home anymore or endless archive repeats. There is live singing for worship going on all the time now.

The fact that women are constantly on the back foot in choral music (and numerous other parts of society) isn’t ok. Please don’t try and belittle the problem and just accept the status quo!

I haven't done either of those, and am not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Criticising a lack of diversity in composers when considering an entire term of music lists would be reasonable, but it's ridiculous to direct ire at just one single service. In fact it's actually counterproductive - if we get to a stage where people fear to pick an Introit, Mag & Nunc and Anthem that can't be labelled "white, male or stale" then we'll be in a very sad place that will do no favours to diversity, or indeed, anything else.
