Diana's funeral in the Abbey was also during chorister holidays. I'm told that they managed to contact them all and bring them back - apart from one - so it can be done. (Not that I am querying the decision to use an adult soprano for the Duke.)

I have a feeling that compulsory return in case of Royal demise is written into some sort of contract at the Abbey. And the inevitable point about pandemics doesn't really need making.

              ... or a particularly well-connected lobbyist, perhaps.

                Some reflections from John Rutter:

What intrigues me here is who chose the music? We are told that Prince Philip planned his funeral in meticulous detail so the music would have been an important function and not something left to chance. Either he took expert advice or the key sequence of the music as explained by Rutter was accidental or a coincidence. Interesting.

I'm glad I'm not the only person for whom key sequence matters.

But, can a person be an accomplishment?

He was, among other musical accomplishments, the composer of many Hollywood film scores, notably the Pink Panther series and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

I thought at first that the piper was going to be omitted from Rutter's comments, but he was there at the end, in a very carefully worded reservation about the sound. Petroc this morning played the recording(although I can't see it on the schedule I'm sure I didn't imagine it) having relayed a listener's comments about the piper and the piece, about it having being slightly altered to fit exactly with the number of steps the piper took to reach his exit point. Bit like film music having to fit the action...
