It would seem that the reason Smith took against black people is that he viewed them as the descendants of both Cain, the Bible’s first murderer, and Ham, the disrespectful son of Noah; the reason for their exclusion from the priesthood is 'the mark of Cain'. Incidentally, it seems to have been a common belief among mainstream Christians in America in the 19th century that black people were descended from Ham, though not from Cain.
On the rare occasions that I'm accosted by Mormon missionaries, they seem genuinely pleased that I've heard of both Joseph Smith and his sidekick, Brigham Young. They're rather less pleased, however, when I ask them if they're aware of Mr Smith's conviction for fraud. They either refuse to believe me, assuming I'm an agent of the devil or something, or say that they'll look into it, which I'm inclined to doubt. For some reason, they're not told about that by the Church. Can't think why.
