I will be certainly be tuning in for the choral evensong from Durham Cathedral this afternoon. I had the great good fortune to attend the university in the 80s (and in the Castle as well) reading History, and once lectures were over, I used to scoot up North Bailey for the service. David Jenkins, in charge at the time, didn't really believe in God, but that didn't really matter as the choir were to die for

..............and were in pretty good form today too!!! And in that fine, fine acoustic.

Particularly liked readings and quiet prayers.

Very much enjoyed this on all counts. Durham seem to be on something of a high at the moment.

Having complained in the past about the dearth of broadcast Cathedral Evensongs these last few years I'm delighted to put on record my appreciation that we've had so many good ones recently, and next week to look forward to.

I really appreciated this broadcast. It also took me back - in my case to the late 60s (Modern Languages). I lived for two years on the North Bailey at St Cuthbert's and frequently called in on Evensong. You could conveniently get from Palace Green to St Cuth's via cathedral, cloisters and past the Chorister School.

You lucky people - my daughter went to Durham but lodged in a new tower block ..... we had lovely Sunday walks up and down North Bailey ....

A bit of a publicity pamphlet for the glories of Durham this thread. I’ve never been, but looked down on the cathedral from the train. I must put this right as soon as conditions allow.
Glorious muscular singing from the choir. The anthem was new to me and I enjoyed it greatly. I thought the soloists were spot lit rather too much for ours and their comfort.
Terrific voluntary to close. Thank you Durham.

We went to Edinburgh a couple of years ago and I was looking forward to that marvellous view. Annoyingly, the train did not stop at Durham and it flashed past all too quickly.

                        This link....

Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation delivers independent, co-educational day and boarding experiences for pupils aged 3 to 18.

....might get you there. Amalgamating schools seems to be a trend, probably a necessary one for financial reasons.

Still on the subject of Durham and this week's CE. Very well sung, though I didn't think the anthem was one of Richard Lloyd's best (sorry Richard!) as it fell very foursquare, almost as if trying to be a hymn. I didn't know it before, but two of his pieces I do know are very effective; Drop down ye Heavens (Advent Prose) and The Reproaches, the latter being especially atmospheric. Matthew Martin's Responses were excellent, I thought, using just enough 'adulteration' of trad harmony to make them contemporary-sounding without frightening the horses.

The music would have been chosen to fit 'Radio 3’s Light in the Darkness season illuminating winter', of which this broadcast formed a part.
