A great, traditional tour de force: good to see a Johnian's favourite anthem ('Yea, he scoffeth at kings').

No statement on the BBC schedules page etc to explain this.
One speculates this maybe Durham's own decision rather than the BBC's.

Best not to speculate. The choir's Facebook page states "We're sorry to announce that the BBC won't be broadcasting our Evensong live this afternoon, due to [sic] the upcoming restrictions."

I do hope that gradually more and more cathedrals will make daily webcasts of Evensong a standard option. Particularly as I'm increasingly disappointed that the BBC have brought cathedral relays down practically to "endangered species" levels over the last five years, even before Covid struck.

So well done to Durham, although it was a great pity that the Parry vol was cut off in its prime, and that the sound - in mono only - left a little to be desired. But these are things that can be worked on, and a decent stereo mic rig, once set up, isn't difficult to maintain. ,

I look forward to the day when we can journey round the country's cathedrals "virtually" on any day of the week, rather than relying on the BBC to make, so often in my case disappointing, only-once-a-week decisions for us.

A big thank you to Durham from me.

The "cut off in its prime" voluntary wasn't the Howells listed in Radio Times or by Parry but Stanford's Postlude (No 6 of his Six Short Preludes and Postludes Set 2)

You are absolutely right RAC, I wrote Parry but meant Stanford!

Still a pity it got cut off though.....

No, not difficult to maintain, but broadcast-quality audio equipment doesn't come cheap, and setting a good system up from scratch will cost a fair bit of money.

Of more concern, to me at least, is that watching a single-camera feed for an hour or so when pretty much all you can see of the choir is the conductor's back is visually quite dull, and I can't help thinking that any novelty will wear off fairly quickly.

Going to a fancy, multi-camera setup will involve considerable expense, at least a four-figure sum, and then you've got to employ someone to change cameras, do the pretty zoom shots, and so on, and the whole thing suddenly starts to cost a lot of money, money that many places may not have at the moment.
My boxes are positively disintegrating under the sheer weight of ticks. Ed Reardon
