A little tribute to AWW on this morning's R3 Breakfast with Petroc: The City of Ely March from his Fenlands Suite for Organ and Brass Band; very Waltonesque. I remember his telling me at the time he'd toyed with the idea of calling it Fenlandia (sic).
Petroc said his Torygraph obit. is in today's edition, but I think he's about a fortnight out.

I heard that too. Was rather impressed. He must’ve been quite a stalwart at Ely. RIP

'stalwart' is a fine example of litotes with regards to AWW, though the choristers did go on strike once and missed an evensong! (You have to remember it was the 70s).

Thanks for that: you beat me to it! We thought it was a lovely and highly appropriate service. It was a colossal privilege to be one of the eight singers for the occasion, although as the service was in the Presbytery we had to use the stalls in the Quire, which don't readily lend themselves to social distancing! We had sopranos at east end of each front row stall and altos at the west end, tenors in the middle of each back row stalls, and basses beyond the west end of the back row stalls in what is normally congregation seating. It was very hard indeed to hear each other or see the conductor! It's probably just as well we were out of shot the whole way through...
