BELFAST CATHEDRAL CHOIR - live broadcast Sunday 16th August 2020

Hello - I’m new to this message board!

Given how much live broadcasts are missed by everyone, I thought that you might like to know that Belfast Cathedral Choir broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster, last Sunday, as part of Northern Ireland’s marking of the anniversary of VJ Day. The choir is an all adult one of just 12 singers, all socially distanced. There are readings from a representative of the Royal Irish Regiment and from the First Minister of Northern Ireland, as well as a sermon from the Dean of Belfast.

    The music details are:

Voluntary (excerpt): Lantana, from the Plymouth Suite (Whitlock)
Hymn: All my hope on God is founded (Michael)
Psalm: 46 (chant ‘from Martin Luther’)
Canticle: Jubilate Deo in C (Britten)
Anthem: Blest are the pure in heart (Philip Stopford, written in February 2020)
Hymn: God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind (The Supreme Sacrifice)
Hymn: The Church’s one foundation (Aurelia)
Voluntary (excerpt): Allegro risoluto, from the Plymouth Suite (Whitlock)

    Belfast Cathedral Choir
    Jack Wilson (organ)
    Matthew Owens (director)

    I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks so much - a refreshingly open, direct and sincere choral sound. What a handsome looking building too!

    Oh, and WELCOME!

I see from the Wells Cathedral site that the assistant sub organist - David Stevens - was previously Organist and Master of the Choristers at Belfast. Matthew Owens was previously DoM at Wells. What happened?

Matthew took up his position at Belfast last September, something which is surely now old news.

Yes I did enjoy very much! A choir which should be heard on a Choral Evensong.
