"However it seems to me that on this forum it is not considered acceptable to question the necessity for cathedrals to have choirs singing every day at great expense. Is it the best way for the church to fulfil its role of spreading the Gospel of Christ? It may be. However forumites, on the whole, seem to believe that the question shouldn't be asked and that the existence of such wonderful music is its own justification."
Sorry, but that is simply not true.
The anger here is mixed with ANGUISH, and a deep knowledge by many forumites of the intricacies, the politics and above all the finances and logistics of such operations.
BUT
many are also aware that from such hard-working, treasure-house-like working laboratories, future excellence emerges to keep areas of music alive. THAT'S where the anguish comes - watching a future rendered bleaker by the strictures or even maybe the limited vision of the present.
It's a tough row to hoe.
