Oh Roger, that is a post that I will treasure as long as I have breath. Encapsulates exactly my feelings, and with an economy of expression that many priests could learn from.

      "buggers off into the sunset"?

He's resigning because of the stress his decision has put him under. I assume, whatever we may think, that he had felt he was doing the right thing - I have no idea what his reasons were and share musicians' anger. Still.......

There is precedent in this regard: I suggest he invests in a nice shepherd's hut to spend his time in.

perhaps a precedent for Westminster Drome?

Indeed, and I'm sorry - genuinely - that what he's done has come back and hit him in this way. But he had plenty of signals that opposition would be tough, and plenty of opportunity to wriggle out of what he'd done - but he chose not to take that course. I don't know why he didn't swerve, but some Deans do seem to have no self-awareness or idea that they might be going the wrong way. Exeter had one a few years ago, and the fight brought the entire system down and led to 80% (I think) of the canons etc resigning. No wonder Joanna Trollope found this sort of situation so rich.....

I really hope that someone still there backtracks fast and gets the choir back into business in the cathedral.

And - who knows? - perhaps Anthony T is enjoying the whole thing on some sort of celestial 24-hour news channel. The late, great Nigel Hawthorne would have been a shoe-in for the TV mini-series that this whole thing cannot fail to inspire - probably written by Andrew Davies, although I'd prefer Jimmie McGovern.

Not just Deans... Strong leadership isn't always the same as good leadership, and can tip over into something altogether less desirable and functional.

Maybe my post was a bit harsh, but ... you reap what you sow.

                    Indeed.

The Drome - now THERE's a story to be told.

Not at all Roger, far from it. You've been at the sharp end and I'm sure know what it can be like, more than most of us.

Just one guy seems to have managed to destroy something that - certainly when I heard the choir a few years ago - was absolutely top-notch. That's a heavy responsibility to bear, but one that he chose to carry - in spite of an awful lot of people asking him to think again.

Does anyone know where Martin Baker is now?

Maybe it was, but it was justified.

I see that the Dean has resigned.
