There's little point in my mind in trying to describe what was so good about that broadcast - the whole thing was perfection.

My only gripe is that the end of the Parry always disappoints me, to my mind he ran out of inspiration entirely!

Absolutely. The lovely acoustic, caught beautifully, added to the perfection of the singing and the delivery of the liturgy.

The highlight for me was the Berkeley anthem. Beautifully done. I was trying to hear, throughout the service, whether the alto line was mixed or not. I guess it probably was, but does anyone know for certain?

MM is going to miss Keble's acoustics. Gonville and Caius is a lovely chapel, but fairly 'dry' by comparison.

What I heard of this - about one third - I really liked. Not knowing the Parry I thought it showed the organ to great advantage in a splendid acoustic.

I don't know Wood Green. (Google , cleverly, comes up with Forest Green which is O Little Town of Bethlehem!) However I've jotted down the tune and bass line and sketched in some harmony...same modulation twice...and if no-one comes up with an answer I'll consult a hymn guru (William Llewellyn) who lives just around the corner. He's in his 90s so I don't like to trouble him after dark.

Ah that explains it. Very much in what I think of as 'the public school chapel' hymnody tradition. That's not a criticism.. There's some really good stirring tunes in, for instance, Hymns for Church and School, formerly known as The Public School Hymnbook. There's an underground station called Wood Green, I think. Maybe inspiration struck on the tube one day.

'Wood Green' was one of two Benediction hymn-tunes (O salutaris Hostia & Tantum ergo) written for Patrick Russill at the London (Brompton) Oratory - I wrote the other one, typeset both and suggested the title of MM's tune. Wood Green, London, is closely associated with the dedicatee.
