    Sir Stephen Cleobury (1948–2019)

It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September. Stephen was Director of Music at King’s for 37 years and was

    That’s really sad news.

A proper gentleman who I was pleased to meet on one occasion.

    Rest in peace.

What extremely sad news, and on Saint Cecilia's Day too. How cruel that Stephen, his wife and family were not allowed to enjoy a richly deserved retirement together. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Indeed. My fondest memory is singing A BOY WAS BORN with him and the KKC trebles in the chapel many years ago.

Very sad to hear this news. Probably why he retired.

Sad to hear this news. I didn't realise he'd been in post for so long.

Terribly terribly sad that his retirement was so short. He was pretty heroic to carry on as long as he did.

His first year at KCC was my last at Cambridge, powerful memories of evensongs and of a family trip to SC’s first Nine Lessons on 24.12.82 (which was the achievement of a lifetime’s ambition for my late dad).

                  Truly saddening news

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Incredibly sad news, I had no idea that he was so ill. I'm grateful that I was able to attend Evensong at Kings, though just the once, and it was, in fact, exactly two years to the very day before his death.

                    May he rest in peace.

Very sad news. He had a bad accident a few years ago and I remember thinking that he still looked far from well when I last saw him performing on Good Friday. Sir Stephen was a fine musician and choir trainer and it's a great pity that he was not able to enjoy a well-deserved retirement (as others have said).
