Surely all radio3 presenters scour these forums daily to pick up handy hints on how to be better presenters (and people in general)...

Penny Gore announced everything perfectly last week and this to my ears, having listened on Sounds. She also helps with my hands free phone in my car. What personal attention! Presenters from yesteryear never did that for loyal Third Programme listeners.

@ jonfan - of course you're right, but (and I admit this is a rare thing) a certain Cormac Rigby greets callers to our landline phone in our absence, and has done for over thirty years. When he passed away I was going to let him rest from his labours on our behalf, but a mutual friend suggested that it was actually a lovely testament to his contribution to Radio 3 and that he should be left in place.

May I gently remind people that one distinguished school of thought once held that the pronunciation is Keeble Bollege, Oxford?

Wonderful tribute mw. I believe he went into the priesthood after he left presenting.

He did indeed, and was an (RC) priest in Ruislip for a number of years.

He was an extraordinarily nice man, and in his Radio 3 Head of Pres days he went - without fail - each day to early Mass, before arriving at the BBC at 8 am. And although he had his battles at the BBC he won a lot of them by outwitting his opponents with (genuine) charm.

I don't say this lightly, but he was one of those rare people in whom you actually catch a glimpse of saintliness in their everyday behaviour, but at the same time he wore his religion very lightly indeed, unlike (dare I say it) some Catholic priests that I have met.

RIP Cormac.

I thought this was an outstandingly high quality of singing and organ playing (and great readings too!). Difficult to see how it could be bettered really, and makes me wonder why Mr Martin is leaving! More cynically, it also made me wonder if there were any 'ringers' brought in... if not, then Keble is doing quite exceptional things!

Keble offers 8 choral scholarships as part of the University’s (very enlightened ) choral scholarship scheme which may explain the very fine singing. The scheme ( from reading the website ) seems to offer scholarships at colleges that don’t have the high choral profile of Christ Church , St John’s and New College .It should do much to raise the overall standard of choral singing at Colleges.

Do you mean Magdalen - or maybe Merton? - rather than St John's which unlike its Cambridge equivalent doesn't historically have a significant choir (and IIRC a pretty tiny chapel). It is very enlightened of Oxford to have a choral scholarship scheme now, but Cambridge had a head start of decades in this area. Oxford was very slow to realise that music, and not just sport, could be an incentive to attract good people and enhance the institutional profile.

As for why Caius is claiming Mr Martin, I have no insider knowledge of why this might be, but merely observe that it is a much wealthier College than Keble.

Yes that was a slip of the mind for reasons I won’t bore you with . St Johns Oxon is also in the Uni scheme . The choir also has a highly professional promo video on YouTube ...
There are many, many reasons for moving Colleges . Any DoM motivated by money has probably chosen the wrong profession.
