Just to set the scene (if anyone hasn't seen the Chapel) have a look:

It's an impressive Victorian Gothic Oxford Reform Movement building with patterned brickwork outside and sumptuous decoration inside. It has forward-facing pews rather than 'chapel-style' seating. Holman Hunt's Light of the World hangs in a side chapel...and is surprisingly small when you see it in the flesh.

The Chapel has a good acoustic, and was used often by Schola Cantorum of Oxford for its concerts. It had an electronic organ when I was last visited (several years ago) but now has a large-ish Tickell pipe organ.

Entering the chapel is both shock and delight.
I remember my very first moment in there as I had done no research beforehand at all!

Oh dear. It would have to be Choral Evensong and a world famous Victorian Divine wouldn’t it?

I can't believe I'm reading this about R3 continuity. Let's hope the announcer doesn't have to introduce a CE from Gonville & Caius.

What - you mean that they've failed to pronounce it correctly TWICE in a week, in spite of what was written here on 17th Nov? And there are people on here who tell me that the current bunch of "presenters" is a huge improvement on the "stuffy" delivery of the announcers of yesteryear.....

Anyway, lovely tone thus far, and I've just noticed who the Director is - no wonder it's so good!

                    ...but not for long:
Matthew Martin, composer, conductor and organist, has been appointed as Precentor and Director of College Music from April 2020.

I wasn't looking forward to the Psalm after the live Edington broadcast which confirms the rumour that it was a spoof. Both chants very well pointed and sung with great clarity by the choir. Other music was also a pleasure to hear. They recorded another service for future broadcast which we can look forward to in the new year.

I enjoyed the service. I was sorry they didn't do a slightly more enterprising Mag and Nunc, especially as they seemed to have time in hand. We heard a real old Anglican regular...but maybe it was a nod to MM's new post, at one time held by a certain C. Wood.

A beautiful service with lots of delicious moments to savour. A lovely setting of Herbert’s poem to begin, confidently sung with clarity of text. Clarity, plus urgency, permeated the psalm too. There was a sense of forward momentum propelled very often with a pronounced crescendo on the reciting notes. Mag, Nunc and the anthem stunningly sung. Stand out for me is the lovely sound of the top line, appropriately so for a Marian themed CE. Fantastic organ voluntary crowning the whole, with ideal sound balance throughout the hour. Looking forward to hearing the CE also in the can.

Surely all radio3 presenters scour these forums daily to pick up handy hints on how to be better presenters (and people in general)...
