I presume that DoMs want to commemorate the composer's 60th birthday this month?

            And his fee?

The BBC has - as usual - killed an event by ludicrously over-playing it.
The moon landing was different even though it got a bit wearisome.
            But Macmillan............???

I don't usually spring to the BBC's defence, but I think in this case you're being a little unfair, Draco.
Given that there is traditionally a broadcast from the Three Choirs, it's not the BBC's fault if this year that service happens to celebrate MacMillan.
And York gave the first broadcast performance very close to his birthday, which again seemed appropriate, especially as they had given the first performance too.

Is it, though? There is another MacMillan Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis...

I can confirm that it is, indeed, the setting of the Canticles composed in 2000 that is being performed at the Festival. Quite an epic...!

I wondered that too, especially as the new service we heard at York was specifically called Short Service.

PS: And Nazard has kindly answered for us!

It was NOT a serious question - the merest thinking aloud. £12 a head just for a pre-concert talk is a lot.

If it had been a pre-concert talk it would have been free(included in the ticket price), but evensong isn't a concert so presumably the talk itself becomes the chargeable event?

It isn't a pre-concert talk. It's at 11 in the morning. Its one of a number of talks in the festival, the price of admission for each of them being £12
