I don't think that broadcast was done any favours by the technical balance. I was having great difficulty making out the words (which I don't think was the fault of the choir) and - particularly during the psalms - it was almost as though the microphones were approaching and then receding from the choir, and with the organ sounding almost on top of them. The technical sound was far from sweet either, difficult to put one's finger on what was amiss but it wasn't of the best, almost as though someone was making an unofficial recording with indifferent mics from their seat near the front of the congregation. The chapel acoustic seemed over-present, and the noise of people changing posture seemed overwhelming.

If one could get through all that I suspect that good things were going on musically, even if it wasn't really my sort of fare.

Anyway, I for one wish Sir Stephen all the best in retirement.

Agree with you about too much organ in the Psalms. But I think everyone was rising to the occasion...and I especially enjoyed the Maw anthem. A great piece, confidently sung, trebles sounding especially good when high and loud!

I think all the repertoire was chosen because of its connection with Kings. Even Radcliffe was a Fellow, I believe.

Joseph Zubier's Alto solo in the anthem, was truly mighty! Donal's playing of the Judith Bingham was superb, and worthy of a fine piece, IMHO of course!

The 'ambient noise' in broadcasts from King's is generally quite loud.
