I can't help wondering on what basis these archive Choral Evensongs are chosen.

That said, the subtle but exquisite playing throughout of Edmund Aldhouse was a joy. Not surprised he's gone on well and ended up at Ely.

I had three short (5 second) breaks during the transmission (listening via DSat). Was that just me?

        .

Well in this case I think enthusiasm counts for a lot. (I'm not sure I like male altos joining in treble unison bits. Ducks for cover.)

When driving along through the Isle of Ely on the afternoon of Wednesday 3rd April, I caught the last few minutes of this broadcast and couldn't for the life of me place where it might be. Then I heard that Duruflé voluntary and thought "well, one thing's for sure, this organist really knows how to play French music, and what on earth is that deliciously bizarre solo stop?!?" Then when I heard who it was I had to smile: of course, none other than Ely's very own Edmund Aldhouse! As people probably know, next week he moves downstairs from our organ loft to become Director of Music, succeeding Paul Trepte, who bows out after Evensong on Easter Sunday after twenty eight and a half years. I do hope EA doesn't shun the organ loft completely, because his playing and improvisation is astonishing. Without revealing anything in advance of the official announcement (which will be made soon), I can nevertheless reassure people that an excellent new Assistant has been secured, who will join us at the end of the summer.
