Choir of King's College, Cambridge 2019

A great evening in King's Chapel on Thursday.

First, Evensong under the direction of Christopher Robinson, (standing in at the moment for Stephen Cleobury who's undergone further medical treatment).

Fascinating to hear a different kind of energy from the choir, somewhat bolder colours, and a more obvious interweaving of musical lines from phrase to phrase. Great set of music to bring out those qualities, too:

Mir hat die Welt trüglich gericht’ (anon. ) Bach
    Responses: Leighton
    Psalms 133, 134, 138 Turle
    Gloucester service Howells
Valiant for Truth (John Bunyan) Vaughan Williams
Let all the World... (George Herbert) Harwood (Luckington)

I shan't soon forget the brassy ring to the choral sound as "all the trumpets sounded" filled the Chapel....

Nor the hymn - there was a dinner for returning choral scholars from the early 80s after the service, and a number of familiar faces were there - and a few seats away from me was Gerald Finley adding not inconsiderable quality to the roof-raising hymn singing!

And then at 9.30pm, something that hasn't happened in the Chapel since the early 1500s - a sung service of Compline by candlelight, with pre-Reformation Sarum Rite plainchant and Robert Wylkynson's nine-part Salve Regina from the Eton Choirbook.

    Hypnotic and unforgettable.

    .

(Thought it was worth a separate thread for this, as 2019 is obviously going to be an important year for the Choir, with the advent of Daniel Hyde in the autumn...)

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Good to hear that lovely account, Calibs. Such a shame the likes of CR can't be coaxed out of retirement.

CR seemed anything but 'retired' on Thursday! Very vigorous (and powerful use of eye contact)

        Lucky you, Caliban!

Will CR be conducting when KCC do CE on R3 on March 13th?

This is what the BBC says (if you click on 'show more')...

Indeed - I had seen that - BUT when was that BBC page set-up - before or after latest medical news?

I gather SC is out and about again and will no doubt do his damndest to direct the broadcast - but I guess it's a case of wait and see...

A tasty music list just right for CR. I wish I'd been there. Can he be leaned on to do more directing or can SC be persuaded he needs more rest?

They have a lovely sound at present. A friend of mine is one of the Alto Choral Scholars. A very fine young Counter Tenor.

I think not. I was at Evensong in King's Chapel yesterday - Stephen Cleobury was back at the helm, and I think it's a pretty safe bet he'll also be directing the CE on Wednesday

Is it his last CE on R3 before retirement?

Over the past year I have heard them at evensong conducted by four different people with a variety of conducting styles (Stephen Cleobury, Ben Parry, Christopher Robinson and Henry Websdale, who presumably have all taken practices as well). I had anticipated this might have adversely affected their form, but quite the opposite in fact.

Well, my guess is they'll have a whole new ball game with rehearsal techniques / repertoire etc etc when DH arrives!!
