Seems that we get to hear the Girls' of Chelmsford and Winchester over the next two Wednesdays. Anything to do with Lesley Garrett?

It’s really good to have Chelmsford back on the wireless.

James Davy has been doing a fine job, an altogether likeable Director of Music.

Shame on me, I didn't even know Chelmsford had a cathedral Having looked it up I see that the gilding and bright colours on the nave and chancel ceilings date back to 1961
And the tune ends too soon for us all

A while back there were occasional broadcasts from Chelmsford, and if my memory serves me aright, the DoM was Graham Elliot. I was always impressed by their high standard. Can anyone remember the date of the last of those? And was Dr Elliot one of those lured to the USA by a larger pay-packet?

I think it was a bit more than occasional, they came round pretty much once a year in the nineties (as of course did most of the regular cathedrals, unlike nowadays).

And I concur fully, Chelmsford was always a broadcast I particularly looked forward to. I've probably got a few recordings from back then.

People were already complaining here in 2011 about the absence of Chelmsford broadcasts: http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...orcester/page3 (see post #27). And I think ardcarp's suspicions are confirmed in this article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...her-wages.html

Ahem................!!

// Matins, Sunday 15 October 2023 This webcast includes Charles Villiers Stanford's anthem O for a closer walk with God. Open in pop-up player The texts of the psalms can be found here (opens in a new tab or window). Text of the anthem O for a closer walk with God, A calm and heavenly frame; A light to shine upon the road That leads me to the Lamb! Return, O holy dove, return, Sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, And drove thee from my breast. So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame; So purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb. William Cowper 1731–1800 We are very grateful to the Perpetual Trust for their support of the music of Hereford Cathedral. To find out more about the work of the Trust or to make a gift to further support our choral foundation please click here. About our webcasts The recording of services began in the autumn of 2015, when a new sound system was installed in the cathedral. These were made available on an occasional basis on our Soundcloud page. Our current aim is to make a different service available each month and, in this way, we seek to allow those unable to be with us in person to participate in the worship that is central to the life of Hereford Cathedral. It is important to note that in these recordings, the listener hears exactly what they would have heard had they been present at the service itself. No extra rehearsal is undertaken beforehand, and no editing takes place afterwards. An order for Choral Evensong can be downloaded here. We hope that you enjoy these ‘snapshots’ of the daily services at Hereford Cathedral. If you would like to be notified each time a new webcast is made available, please fill in this form. Archive An archive of our more recent webcasts is available here. To see all our previous webcasts, please visit our Soundcloud page.

Try this for a jolly Xmas-based recital from Hereford Cath - Peter Dyke doing the biz.

An enjoyable service. Excellent sound from the front row in particular! Nice to hear a girls choir at a small cathedral thriving.

Don't know the Howells so well, but enjoyed it, though probably not one of his absolute best.

The Stopford is one of my favourite contemporary pieces, and I thought this was the highlight of the service, though the soloist perhaps lacked a little confidence in her voice towards the end... Glad to see this piece being programmed for CE, though.

Congratulations on a great service, I enjyoed the organ voluntary especially the eclectic registration. Was it the DoM playing?

Totally agree, Stopford was lovely, such simple, clever writing. and the way the solo just emerges from the texture at the end is genius, wobble or not!
Yes, James Davy was playing, he used to be number 2 at Blackburn and I imagine he enjoys getting back 'behind the keys'!
I thought the girls did very well in that service, especially for a first broadcast and a live one at that! Wasn't blown away by the 'back row' but I'm not sure how the setup works there. Are there scholars?
Brava tutti

Agree with all of the above. I should imagine it would be James Davy playing the voluntary as in the schedule.
There seemed to be a large group of singers as the sound was rich and full with a keen attack which communicated well to the listener. The engineering was a bit odd in the climactic sections in the canticles where the upper line receded and exposed some quite harsh sounds in the lower voices.
I particularly liked the precentor who delivered with clear diction and pitch, especially in the long collects.
Stopford is popular with our choir and congregation and his music communicates in a simple, direct way which it did today. I enjoyed today’s service very much and I hope the girls can be a regular fixture on CE.

There are scholars, but I believe only a few this year unlike other years where they have had up to six.
