    Once in Royal David's City - R4

Slightly off piste for this forum but I hope you'll forgive me.

Did anyone hear this, broadcast on Christmas Day? I found it very moving, especially the section about the Johnston brothers - had to stop the car to wipe away a tear.

Other highlights included the description of Boris Ord's growl to give the pitch (I can only say if it sounded like that it's as well that the chorister had equipped himself with his own tuning fork) and an interview with the chap who sang the solo in the very first broadcast of 9LC from King's in 1928, under AH Mann.

Perspectives, too, from parents. No mention of the organ scholar, who may find he needs to come in for the third verse in the key of G flat - which I have seen done.

Must listen VC...and your post is by no means off-piste. An old friend of ours (Derek Hetley) who died some 20 years ago, was a bass choral scholar in the first broadcast. Incidentally, A.H. Mann was taught the organ by someone born in the 18th (yes, 18th) century.
