Taken on pilgrimage to FJ's organ-man-cave at East Acklam, the year before his century. He his well-known, when turning up to Evensong and noticing this wonderful evening service happens to be on the music list, to exclaim "Ah, I see you're doing Me in G". So we commissioned an autograph copy...

I didn't go to this service (I easily could have done), partly because I've been told that while the heating system is being replaced the Abbey is very cold. But I think I recognised that lusty voice, slightly out of time with everyone else, in the final hymn!

Lovely though that photo is, am I alone in wondering whether the address and phone number should be on public display....?

A fantastic Evensong from Bath Abbey! Well sung throughout - I thought that the Choristers sounded as though they have been well trained, and the men sounded very accomplished indeed - a service that any Cathedral Choir could be proud of, let alone a parish church!(albeit a big one!)

Beautiful service with a nice distant but well balanced soundscape for the singers. Stunning Bruckner, scaling the heights with out any fear by the girls.
Thrilling final voluntary. Thank you Bath.

Listened again - the bawler in the congregational hymn is particularly audible solo at 50' 17", and he has his own particular take on the final chorus at 52' 43". I'd guess he practises at the Rec!

I enjoyed the choir's singing but some of the vowels jarred - the thin ones on words like 'to' which tended towards the French 'tu'. I don't know whether imitating pop singers is the source of this trend - in the choirs I've heard live, it seems to be something older choristers in particular go in for.

That narrow 'u' has become the youth-normal I'm afraid. It takes lots of proper 'oo' singing exercises to get round it. The other teenage thing is words like 'street' or 'stress'...which are now routinely pronounces as 'shtreet' and 'shtress'. Very shtessful.......

Without wishing in any way to put proverbial feline 'inter columbas'...having worked with a lot of school choirs over 30 years...this is a particular girl trait that is very hard to eradicate.

I should explain a little bit about the layout of Bath Abbey when this broadcast was made. The Chancel was a hard hat area and closed off up to the crossing, where there was now a partition, in front of which the choir stood. So the choir could still sing with the organ, but it was probably harder to balance choir and congregation in the broadcast (with the audible results!)

I think Peter King managed to keep the thin vowels at bay, but they have crept in since he left a couple of years ago.
