I remember Richard Seal once making the possibly unhelpful observation that the difference between a boy's voice and a girl's voice was like that betweem a Nuits-St-Georges and a Chablis.

Way back when, 'twas the voice of Emma Kirkby (on CFM, I'm afraid) that sparked my interest in Early and Renaissance music. I thought all professional women singers used a warble and found her voice most refreshing.

EK’s voice has that rare quality of being able to combine warmth and purity. There are those that have a pure voice but sing with no real feeling for the lyrics or meaning of the song.

Boys' voices are Syrah - at times - maybe even with an edge of adrenal-producing prosecco - at times.

Very true. Though it's a mistake to think she uses no vibrato. She often uses it for expressive purposes, but importantly she is able NOT to use it when it's not needed.
