I'm not sure I've ever sung Stanford in E flat. Some info about them on Hyperion's website:

Bairstow twice in two weeks. My cup runneth over....

Not sure it's still the case, but I used to love the way Chester (and for that matter Blackburn) used to do the psalms in the late 80s and early 90s. It honestly sounded like lambs gambolling over grassy tussocks on a sunny breezy day - joyous, lithe, fast (but not rushed in any way), gentle and subtle. But that was then....

you've been lucky to avoid them - they're like G and S having a day out in Barchester

Is an office hymn customary at Chester (yes, I know I could go to the archive, but......)?
It's something I associate, perhaps incorrectly, with the higher end of the CofE spectrum, somewhere where Chester used not to be.
Mind you, with a tune called Golden Sheaves it might be more a celebration of the harvest moon than of the rite of evensong!

I'm not a fan of this Stanford, but I hope the breaks in sound I've heard aren't there on the iPlayer or Sunday repeat. It feels odd to hear Golden Sheaves, especially at this time of year, with any but the harvest festival words.

Yes there were about 4 short drop-outs; but after the final one in the Stanford Mag Gloria it all seemed OK And the balance between organ and choir was good I thought. The Stanford was new to me...quite jolly really, and 'verse-anthem-type' canticles, outside the Weelkes/Byrd/Gibbons era are something of a rarity, as far as I can recall. (There's Stanford in G, of course, but that's just solo.)

enjoyed it all immensely on iPlayer - would have done so in person (Chester is so near!) but have just been hit by terminal cancer diagnosis. How many CEs have I got left?

I am extremely sorry to read this, Jean. How dreadful. What can I say other than I hope you get to hear a lot of them and with a good quality of life.

Heartfelt sympathy comes from me too, Jean. And may there be plenty more CEs and other musical happenings too.
