I went to a stonking Evensong at Truro on Monday, Wood in E flat two and Finzi Lo, the full. Fabulous example of choir, organ and acoustic working in harmony. And if that wasn't enough indulgence, Cocker Tuba Tune to finish. What a wonderful establishment it is down there!

Totally agree - Chris Gray is running a heck of a ship.

NB - tomorrow evening’s concert from Truro is also LIVE despite the failure of Radio Times to indicate this in the print listing with its ‘Live’ indicator.

And THAT is how you do Evensong IMO.
Exquisite singing, the Sheppard and Tye especially. And some fine Psalm singing too - discipline and cohesion.
              Truro at its Best.

The psalms in particular were lovely. Can anyone tell me anything about Henrietta Moran? Google is rather unforthcoming, but it seems she was active in Ireland.

I can find out more later, but I think she was involved in music making in the church in Bangor, Northern Ireland, where our DoM grew up, literally and musically. I thought her piece sung during the prayers was reminiscent of Parry in Songs of Farewell mode.

A superb experience both musically and spritually. A rich, expressive warm sound from the choir from the bass up; girls on the top line? And what a top line - tender and delicate but with a rush of power when needed. Another moving psalm sequence (we’ve had a wonderful variety in recent CE’s). Responses and Canticles beautifuly sung, but the highlight of highlights was the Anthem - wow!
I must get a copy of the Moran; it reminded me of those exquisite miniatures Thalben-Ball composed as Introits to the Daily Service.
A superb Howells’ Rhapsody from Joseph Wicks crowned a wonderful experience. Great engineering which was so good you didn’t notice it.

Having had my hearing banjaxed by earwax problems when the Truro evensong and concert were originally transmitted, now that I can hear properly again (thanks, NHS), I've found time to listen to both broadcasts properly. And they are both quite wonderful. Fabulous top line, with excellent support from the lower voices. Some quite young sounding voices there too, I suspect. And two excellent soloists.

If anyone reading this missed either broadcast, I urge you to listen before they disappear from the BBC player.

According to the Truro website, its was was Boys & Girls singing together for evensong, whilst for the concert, it seems that there were some items in the first half which were sung by either the Boys or the Girls.

Thanks to all at Truro for two outstanding broadcasts.

Extraordinarily expressive singing and playing: and the Academy Award for use of the swell pedal goes to...
The best performance of Howells in G, exquisite psalms (loved the accomp. esp), Tye done stonkingly well and the best engineering that really brought out the correct balance and space of the building.
