Spring Bank holiday week usually has a live CE from the St Davids Cathedral Festival. Anyone know why this is not the case?

They open tonight [25th], and it's pretty full on then, so.............maybe it doesn't fit their schedule this year?

The broadcast CE has been a proud feature of the festival in the past so it’s unlikely they wouldn’t want to make room for it. There have been some changes there with a new Dean at the cathedral and the grant from Welsh Arts cruelly slashed.

I’ve been a patron for several years now and get information about the festival finances, though I haven’t been able to attend this year to experience at first hand what’s happening. IMHO the CE from St Davids is one of the pinnacles of the CE year on Radio 3 so it’s disappointing not to hear it this time.

Well, from what you say, you're very possibly in a far better position to explore the 'anomaly' than anyone else on the Forum and report back!!

I believe St David’s had arranged to do the broadcast, but the BBC pulled out because the outside broadcast people they use were all busy with the big Music Weekend this weekend (presumably it was to have been recorded then). I can’t remember where I read this, obviously not this board so maybe somewhere like the ‘CE appreciation society’ on Facebook. The source of the information was close to St David’s.

Thank you for this. As the BBCNOW are at St Davids on Friday it seems a pity the facilities to record them couldn’t be used for a CE.

Agreed, so it looks like a decision by 'home team' maybe?

The 'home team' DoM has posted on social media that "We are hopeful there will be one in 2019...", so perhaps we can draw the speculation to a close.

Oliver Waterer posted the following on the Choral Evensong Appreciation Society on Facebook on 14 February (or a little later):

"We've been told that sadly the BBC can't broadcast Evensong live from St Davids or indeed anywhere that day because their technicians are all involved with a big nation-wide music festival elsewhere during that period, hence their putting out an archive evensong on that day instead. But we hope to broadcast again in 2019."

I wonder why the folks at the BBC didn't choose an archived Evensong from Saint Davids.

                              Agree
When I’ve attended the festival week I’ve noticed engineers from Manchester arrive and set up a rig for CE on Wednesday. They clear away and then on Friday engineers arrive from Cardiff and set up for the BBCNOW. A restrictive, wasteful practice. I pointed out above the engineers are in St Davids on Friday for the orchestra and could have recorded a CE. Obviously from the wrong city.
