I was standing in the 'University' queue for evensong at King's last weekend. Naturally, the new appointment was a major topic of conversation among those around me, and no one who expressed an opinion was anything other than delighted with it.
As for the sound of the choir, my own view is that this is bound to change over time, and indeed making the choir conform rigidly to a precise 'ideal' sound may be a mistake. I think of another choir in Cambridge which always used to sound exactly the same, regardless of the personnel - some of whom later said that being forced to conform to that sound had been damaging to their voices.
