Well, I think we ought to have a thread dedicated to this subject. Over to you, everyone........

The question is, "Does he write good descants?" Willcocks and Ledger did. Cleobury's were worse than dreadful (in my opinion).

The parallel announcement from St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue of DH's departure from NYC has an interesting bit:

"This is a bittersweet day for Saint Thomas Church; when we appointed Daniel, the search committee was very much aware that Stephen Cleobury would be retiring in 2019 and that Daniel would be among those considered talented enough to succeed him."
In other words, the underground word was out back in 2016 that Cleobury would call it a day in 2019.

Interesting use of the word 'called', both ways across the Atlantic.

Hmm - interesting: could it even be, then, that back in 2016, yes, SC's departure was known, BUT more to the point, that DH was ALREADY either a shoe-in for the KCC job, or, as you seem to be suggesting, St T's seem to know he'd be on the shortlist even then., and even more, that he'd be likely to at least be looking elsewhere if he didn't get the KCC job.......? Hmm.

                    Much to ponder, eh?

I think you're reading rather too much into the St Thomas piece. Although I doubt the precise date of Stephen Cleobury’s departure from King’s was known in 2016, it would be reasonable to assume he would be retiring round about the time he will be if only because of his age.

Also, given that Daniel Hyde is a former King’s organ scholar and that the pool of people who would be both capable of doing the job and willing to jump into that particular bear-pit would be pretty small, Daniel Hyde's presence in that pool could fairly easily have been predicted.

Lastly, if you knew the short-list for the post, I'm not sure you'd say he was a shoo-in.

there were a number of speculative assertions about Stephen Cleobury’s retirement made without actual foundation. The 3 Choirs festival announced in 2016 (in a preview of his 2017 appearance there) that he would retire in 2018, and had to remove the announcement from its website a little later.

Why exactly does it need to be shared here?
