It will be interesting to hear the 'new' acoustic in a service context. Stainer's Crucifixion just before Easter gave us a taster, and the sound was warmer. The Andante espressivo movement from the Elgar Sonata is the very lovely third movement - a contemplative way to end the service, which makes a welcome change (IMO) from the usual bombast!

Seeing Elgar's The Spirit of the Lord coming from Guildford reminds me of the story about Anthony Froggatt, assistant organist at Guildford during Barry Rose's time, who said to Barry one Saturday evening, This Elgar tomorrow, it is unaccompanied, isn't it?

Extraordinary that no one has commented on this service, preferring an Elgar-bash in some cases. I do so often wonder about how this forum functions in practice, and what motivates some of the contributors.

Missed the introit and most of the psalms, but got my beloved Bairstow (I have said for years that I shall have his Nunc at my funeral!). Then got called away, but listened to the rest on iplayer. I must say that the Elgar didn't actually really "do it" for me, I'll give it another try but maybe it isn't quite his best.

But I enjoyed the singing and the service, and it's a pity that Guildford's successful broadcast has passed with no comment here. I at least can try and rectify that. Well done!

The non-choir bits of the service didn't fare so well - the announcement for the second hymn was drowned out by the playover, and there were more diphthongs than usual on display in the collects!

@ mopsus - I must say I skipped through the in-between bits as time was at a premium so the deficiencies you mention are a treat to come then for me!

@ DracoM - sorry about the plumbing - are you finally having that water-driven 32 ft installed?
