Places that webcast Evensong

In view of the likelihood that the BBC will provide us with ever fewer live broadcasts from cathedrals, I wonder whether there's any way that a summary page of webcast addresses and times could be assembled. I realise that this forum is primarily about Radio 3, but I can't believe that I'm the only one losing faith in the BBC's ability to provide the sort of Choral Evensong service it used to, and instead of moaning about it maybe the time has come for me to try and find alternatives....

One could of course trawl through a whole load of cathedral websites, but does anyone have any recommendations as to what's present now, and what's worth hearing?

Thanks DracoM. That's a good start. I seem to remember Truro do some, and that we have a contributor on here with connections?

My rationale is similar to that following Kenyon's vandalism of Radio 3 in 1992. For three years I pined and moaned, then obtained a sat receiver which picked up the dozen or so German classical stations, and after that I'm afraid I couldn't have given a monkeys about the state of Radio 3, I just went in once a week for CE.. I'm rather hoping to be able to do the same for Choral Evensong, and if other cathedrals are planning stuff then the frustration I'm feeling over what's going on currently with the reduction in live relays will be largely eliminated.

The National Cathedral in Washington, DC offers video broadcasts via YouTube. I don't believe it's every service, and I do believe that Sunday Eucharists are the priority, but there are a few Evensongs represented, especially where they mark festivals or other 'big' days in the life of the Cathedral.

Thanks for the replies thus far, that's incredibly cheering and I can see that I already will have a few to feast on when the BBC lets me down.

For my own tastes I had hoped there'd be more cathedrals in on the game, it seems the Oxbridge lot are far ahead in this area. But I don't doubt that cathedrals will see the opportunity this allows to introduce Evensong to the wider world and catch up in the next few years - let's hope so.

Truro Cathedral Choir has posted a few of its recent Holy Week / Easter services on its Soundcloud page. This is accessible via our refurbished website: http://www.trurocathedral.org.uk/mus...oir/recordings

Although we have the right equipment installed, there is no one at present to oversee the whole process of recording, selection, and uploading, so it’s only when our very busy DoM has a spare moment that he does it himself. Unfortunately our uploads to Soundcloud have become very irregular, but I think you will be delighted to listen to what has recently been webcast. NB: Soundcloud can indeed sound cloudy and soft when listening on a [smart]phone or tablet. The files sound much more realistic when played through decent hifi equipment at home.

Please note the three different configurations of the choir: (a) boys (aged 8-13) and adult singers (Lay Vicars and Choral Scholars), (b) girls (13-18) and adults, and (c) tutti. There’s also a possibility of (d) back row only, but I don’t think any of these has been uploaded, eg the Tallis Lamentations on Monday of Holy Week, conducted by our new ADoM who, apart from being a star on the Father Willis, also sings tenor in the Gesualdo Six (whose first CD is just out on Hyperion).

Informal researches are showing that some UK foundations - no names yet - are contemplating webcasting.
Some slightly surprising [big] ones are most definite that they are not.

I say 'surprising' because one would imagine that 'outreach' these days is not just physical contact, but using many means to widen the reach of the foundation's work? Added to that is the pressing need to show the young involved in both church and singing / music. Thus showcasing them via regular webcasts surely ticks several boxes?

I do fully appreciate the logistical costs / side-effects that must necessarily go with such a decision.

St Thomas has great confidence when it webcasts all its public choral services and keeps them online for a while. There is always the risk that a webcast preserves, erm, a moment that is best forgotten. A less risky approach is not to announce in advance which services will go online, listen to the recordings and then use the ones that do the choir and organist justice.
