    Choir and Organ 18-2-18

I have a fairly high tolerance to 'rag-bag' programmes but even I have my limits - and this reached them well before the halfway point. A pick and mix hotch potch but missing the essential 'pick' element which would imply a modicum of thought given to what went in the bag before getting to the checkout. No attempt to (apologies in advance) curate, so no links or explanation worthy of the name, and pieces running back to back in ludicrous juxtaposition.
    A sad state of affairs.

SMP does 'trax' - that's it.

With the exception of the organ buried in the orchestral and choral texture of the RVW, there was nothing spotlighting the king of instruments either... which must be something of a trade description issue!

Wasn't the right time of the month...Organ takes centre stage(allegedly) once a month. But as the programme follows the same dire format as the choir bit then it's not worth getting excited about.

          That's slightly better than "songs".

It's developed into the favoured station format - the ubiquitous presenter in the studio playing a succession of bits from CDs. The cheapest programming there is. I presume there aren't texts and tweets, now it's not live?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Isn't a 'mix tape' even cheaper? Because that#s where I think a lot of the R3 day is going. Ess class - big target for it?

I have been told , by a very good source, that the mixtapes actually take up a great deal of time and effort.
I dont know if they are cheap or expensive.

If they take a great deal of time and effort then they're not going to be cheap are they, and begs the question as to whether that's a good use of increasingly scarce resources?

I haven't listened to this programme, I might not have missed much, then?

That's about the sum of it. 14 'items' in the hour with no discernible(at least not to me) reason for their placement in the running order, nor indeed for being played in the first place. The only common theme was that they were choral pieces.I didn't hear the whole programme, but I don't think that precludes me on this occasion from assuming that the 20 mins I did hear were typical of the whole.
What is sad is that there were some less common pieces in the mix but the opportunity to make the most of them with explanation/information (in keeping with the title of the programme if nothing else) was of course ignored completely.

Which pretty neatly sums up precisely why this programme has caused the irritation and disappointment among its potential listeners.

And a depressingly ill-informed page under their auspices offering some background to Six Easter Choral Gems.

I really don't mind the information being fairly basic, but why can't it be accurate, too?

This programme can do so much more, as in the old days! Paul Guinery, wasn't it?

Different presenter otherwise same old same old this Sunday. What a waste of Roderick Williams, whose presenting style I greatly enjoy, to just be presiding over a ragbag collection of organ items(which I note aren't even listed at the moment). If, as seems the case, R3 is determined to drive Choir and Organ to extinction as a functional programme, then it might as well put the present incarnation on as part of the morning schedule - nothing there to frighten the horses in terms of technical talk or challenging information(assuming one subscribes to the current low opinion of the morning audience)
