However, they are much quieter now than in 1988, believe it or not!
Oh I can believe that. I lived for a year in a top floor flat in the centre of Weybridge, and well remember how conversation had to be paused as jets went over, and as for Concorde...

As a child, used to live under that flight path but even closer to Heathrow. Hell every four minutes at high density times.

Just as enjoyable second time round. I was less aware of the slight lack of treble that I remarked on in the Wednesday version. However, as received here (by satellite) there was a ten second break half way through the anthem. I wonder if that was local to me? Generally DSat reception is remarkably stable.....

and why (to return to your point) BAL can't be an hour or so each time
Definitely no such break on the FM repeat. Given the recording was made 30 years ago, I thought it was pretty good. The organ, although being given the necessary wellie in the Parry items, didn't swamp the choir at all.

Indeed, it was a nice balance. As they almost always were back then.

Odd about "my" break. It's possible something happened to the satellite feed, and of course it is possible that my receiver crashed. I was just walking over to it to tune out and back in again when it restored itself, which suggests that it wasn't actually a receiver problem. Who knows?
