Haha - no - this is a long time ago - when the BBC was less PC than today - Guildford was not held in high respect, and was known in-house as Watford Cathedral. I suspect that is what got written on the label, the production assistant at the time never for a moment suspecting that it would ever see the light of day again!
How splendid....and of course the current PA, not knowing, has happily copied it out.

Not held in high respect by whom exactly?

At that time they were certainly better than many of the top names

Woa, steady on, VCC. Sez who??
I heard Guildford quite often in those early days for a variety of reasons, and they were ...erm...'variable'.

Oh dear, I can see we are in for a week's Rose Love-fest / bickering. First, let's just hear the evidence on Wednesday from 4 p.m., OK?

St Barry apart, there seem to me to be other questions that invite speculation (or even a definitive answer). Why, for example, when most cathedrals are still going concerns chorally, are we being treated to an archive recording in June? And why does the treat consist of an Anglican choir singing a Roman service in a Roman building? I'm not complaining, but I do think it's rather odd.

I've no objection to that...au contraire.

But I agree with you there. Surely the archives are a stop-gap for choristers' or choral scholars' holidays?

                  Draco,

Not exactly early days, Barry had been there since 1960 for goodness sake and had built a choir that was considered to be better than Westminster Abbey and St Pau'ls at the time which is why Christopher Dearnley appointed him as sub - organist there the year after this broadcast.

His church choirs before he went to Guildford were considered by George Guest, no less, to be better than many cathedral choirs.

I must admit I think an Evensong broadcast would have been a better choice. The archive recording no doubt has something to do with this being the 50th anniversary of the cathedral.

                  VCC

Sunday's CE is a live broadcast from the Savoy Chapel as part of the Light Music Festival so there probably isn't the budget for two live transmissions in one week.

I usually post service details later in the week, but have put up details of the Sunday 26th June live tx earlier to help people avoid confusion.

I notice that the Watford references have now disappeared (if anyone was wondering what I was on about)

Yes - in an idle moment the other day I rang them about it.
The irony is that St Barry did end up at the real Watford Cathedral - or, as VCC would call it, St Albans.

It's just very sad that Arundel cathedral hasn't got a choir of its own.

But it has recently (07) had its organ rebuilt finally - think it was in a pretty poor way by then.
