Choral Evensong: Wed, Nov 15th 2017

    Russian Orthodox Prayer Service

    Recorded in 2003

Rachmaninov: Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom
[Choir of King's College, Cambridge / DoM: Stephen Cleobury]

Added commentary by the Very Revd Archimandrite Kyrll Jenner.
    Celebrant: Tobias Sims.
    Deacon: Peter Scorer.

NB: this appears to be a commercial recording carrying the musical core of this Prayer Service.

A Russian Orthodox Prayer Service with Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.

I continue to be a bit concerned over the apparent reduction in live CE (or Vespers, or whatever) broadcasts.

KCC is more complete, more HIPP (with boys on the top line), and has real Orthodox clergy. (Also very well reviewed in Gramophone.)

          This is, allegedly, a one-off.

Love 'allegedly' - tongue firmly in cheek??

            But it isn't a 'one-off', is it?

Recordings of various kinds have actually been a significant part of CE scheduling over the last few months. Recordings or archives in Summer, maybe; earliest September, too, yes can understand that from DoM's pov. BUT by mid-November most serious cathedral and college choirs are surely more absolutely on top of their game than almost any other time of the academic year? New choristers know ropes, excited by live broadcasts, have had ensemble practice, know the repertoire a sight better than in September, and mid-Nov is before many ensembles get into the high water Xmas shows, so............??

Money? Is it cheaper to tx a recording than a live broadcast?
BBC's obsessional Russian 'immersion'? i.e. as hinted at RH, is BBC putting pressure on choirs to 'sing Russian' and they are reluctant??
DoMs protesting behind the scenes? Or being unwilling?
            Or what?

The use of a commercial CD is supposed to be a "one-off".

This week and next week are CE's contribution to the Russian season.

                  Yes to both.

In which case, the future for live CE is in real jeopardy, I'd be tempted to say.

I don't think it is in jeopardy, but there are/will be fewer live broadcasts than there have been in the past. It's simply down to money.

Presumably they have a colossal archive?

I imagine it must go back years.

Bit thrown by the clumsy mismatch of studio and chapel, and I began to wonder as I listened if - can anyone confirm / refute? - there had been choral reinforcements at the commercial recording?

My information is that there were one or two additional low basses.
