Dr Francis Jackson, Centenary, 2 October

Delighted to see a colour photograph of Dr Jackson in yesterday's York Press,(17 Oct),
spread across four columns, holding his congratulatory postcard from HM Queen, on his
centenary, 2 October. A radiant expression from a 70 year old and I understand
from a friend at York Rec Music Society that he remains lively and articulate. The
photo supported by an editorial covering his mentor and teacher, Dr Edward Bairstow.
Dr Jackson received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists with the Limpus prize 1937
graduating with a BMus from Durham University. When Dr Bairstow became ill, Francis
Jackson was appointed assistant organist at York Minster and after Dr Bairstow's death
in 1946, he was invited by Dean Eric Milner to take over as organist and Master of
the Music, a post he held until retiring in 1982. He gave recitals all over the world,
making numerous recordings of solo organ music and choral music with the Minster choir,
and his recital career continued past his 95th birthday. As a composer, his output
has not abated since retirement and he has more than 150 published works to his name.
A life crowded with incident! - I've now ordered a copy of his autobiography,
Music for a Long While, (2013), eager to learn more

Duly celebrated on Radio 3 Breakfast yesterday, with a recording of him playing his own Impromptu for Sir Edward Bairstow on his 70th Birthday. A very nice touch.

I've never heard any of his music.

Jackson Responses this week at the minster, and his Audi filia as the anthem at evensong yesterday (though I was not there): it's included in this recent CD compilation, which I can thoroughly recommend:

What a splendid photograph! Where did you find that - or were you there?

There's a selection on YouTube, but, by and large, the quality of the sound isn't great. Dr Jackson writes for the serious musician. He doesn't do shallow, catchy ear-ticklers.

I don’t know him personally, but he’s a friend of a friend (owner of Banks Music Publications) who was happy for me to post it here.

That comes across as quite a put down but I'm sure that wasn't the intention.
What I have heard of his music, mostly on CE, I don't always find easy to listen to but not offputtingly so, and repeat hearings are rewarding. I did enjoy the organ piece on Breakfast, as utct said, a nice touch.

No. Quite the opposite! As you point out yourself, repeated hearings are rewarding. I think that proves my point. The best music does not give up all of its riches on the first hearing.

I suppose the most frequently aired piece of his is the set of Canticles (the Mag and Nunc) known in the trade as Jackson in G. It's well-wrought and most appealing.

However, I'm also a friend of a friend of FJ, and I gather his compositions are many and varied, and not just Anglican stuff.

A number of years ago I depped at Southwark Cathedral and sang it under his direction, which was very pleasant.

Thanks ardy - really lovely, stands easily in comparison with anything I've heard by Rubbra and Howells.
