I did a double take when I saw ' BuckfastAbbey ' as I know their posh new Italian organ is installed but not quite ready for a public outing. However I realise this is an old recording of The Exon Singers. Glad the Beeb are honouring Francis Jackson in this way, though wonder why a special broadcast from York could not have been arranged?

York seem to have been moved to a Lenten slot in the past few years having previously done a stint in Summer term.

Good to hear the wonderful Ralph Downes inspired Walker organ. It has been a bit shaky in recent years, but at its best it could do almost anything in the organ repertoire and was a gem for accompanying. Let us hope the Abbey's decision to replace it with a new Italian job turns out well.

The Abbey now has a paid adult choir which sings for Sunday Mass.

Outstanding for me were the Jackson introit, sung with astonishing control, accuracy and quiet power, and the more rapturous Holst motet. I kept thinking what one heck of an ensemble the Exon Singers were / are. Light years ahead of many.

Oh yes, and the Jackson vol was something else as well.

Thanks for that Gabriel. Those who have read the link will notice that the founder of The Exon Singers was not given a credit. It was Chris Teuten, then a lay clerk at Exeter, still alive and a very fine choir trainer. One member of his early soprano line was a certain Emma Kirkby.
