Nothing silly in what you say ardcarp and I didn't mean to be confrontational. The question of pressure is probably quite important - the last seasonal discussion re Kings at Christmas touched on that. I also wonder about the difference in those listening- whether largely tourists, or the 'home crowd' participating in a service rather than a concert(audience vs congregation?) - which gives a different atmosphere? The intangible 'feel' coming back from those listening can be inspiring, adding to the spiritual element in the church context, and lifting the music beyond the merely satisfactory.
Enough waffle, time to face the reality of acts of God in the gardens where I do a volunteer stint on Wednesday morning....

There's a lot in what ardcarp says. As the dean says in his introduction, St Davids is 'a holy and beautiful place.' The calm of the Cathedral Close by the River Alun, where the organist and choral scholars live, must be good for the soul as well as the body. A city church most likely can draw on a wide choice of potential choristers but St Davids' isolation from big cities gives the young choristers time to enjoy what the cathedral offers without other distractions. There's even no Macdonalds in the city yet as far as I know.
