A CE of the very highest quality. Such a beautiful sound and controlled and balanced singing. Hard to pick a favourite moment but the Byrd was exquisite.

I'm afraid I don't recognise the words wretched and ugly in context of the Leighton we heard here.

Fine, you have your tastes and I have mine. No problem.

I'm taking the unusual step of reminding listeners of the repeat of this excellent CE this p.m. @ 3 p.m.

A meticulously prepared evensong. Exemplary psalm singing with great clarity of diction and colouring of words. I've compared this to the CE from Rochester boys a few weeks back which was also highly thought of on these boards. Rochester take more risks and seem to go with the moment with a brighter treble sound, whereas Winchester are smoother and fully in control at all times. All this goes to show what embarrassment of riches we have with the CE's we've enjoyed recently and impossible to place in any order of preference. No wonder more are listening year on year.

Yes, a very enjoyable Evensong indeed.

I was fascinated by the debate about Leighton up thread - while I found the Magdalen setting immediately appealing, it has taken me some while and several (live) hearings to get to grips with the Second Service. I think I have now done so and agree it is probably the more mature setting.

That said, the Magdalen is a fine setting, although I think it needs a more spiky organ behind it to be effective, probably a product of the instrument we heard here.

A fine service, and that David Bednall piece really is terrific.
