Caroline Trevor wasn't/isn't a full vicar choral, and Carris Jones (a colleague of mine!) is the first woman to be appointed as a full vicar choral at St Paul's. The news reports that I have seen are not claiming that her status is a first for the UK. She is incredibly talented, very intelligent, versatile, modest and a model colleague. She sings Byrd and Palestrina as well as she sings Duruflé and Tchaikovsky.

I suppose that the sexual equality legislation means that with full time professional vicar choral/lay clerk cathedral choir alto/countertenor vacancies D&Cs have no choice but to advertise the posts as open to men and women since both sexes can sing the part. This being the case then obviously the best candidate should be appointed but it does mean the demise of the traditional cathedral all male choir in some places which is rather sad.

      VCC.

Talking (I know jean, we shouldn't be) about the Miserere, all male choirs and disappearing boys brought this announcement from King's College choir to mind:

        Pacta sunt servanda !!!

"She will join three male counter-tenors in the alto section on 1 September after giving birth to her second child"

that'll be a busy day for her

I don't usually contribute to threads on this sort of topic, but for the record, Lincoln appointed a female alto six years ago: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...shire-15022098. I have seen women singing alto in Gloucester cathedral choir, but don't know whether they were deps.

What's this sort of topic? You make it sound a bit shameful!

Discussions about women/girls in cathedral choirs. These ran for ages in (for example) the Friends of Cathedral Music magazine, at the expense of other things I'd rather have read about. I have my own opinions and am happy to discuss them over a drink or a meal, but don't want to add to the online column inches on the subject.

I'm surprised that no one has yet remarked on the headline on the St Paul's website: 'First woman in 1,000 years becomes full member of St Paul's Cathedral Choir'. If Carris is the first woman in 1,000 years, what are all those things that look like women? I mean, I know that Theresa May is known as the Maybot, but really.....
