" Director Andrew Nethsingha takes a sabbatical during the Lent Term, so we are very pleased to welcome back John Challenger to St John’s as Acting Director of Music. John was an Organ Scholar at St John’s from 2008 to 2011, and since then has become Assistant Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral."

This was a wonderful CE with effortless expression throughout. I enjoyed the clear divisions between the choirs in the Allegri which made for great clarity. One or two drop outs in transmission early on which soon cleared. Brilliant, dramatic reading of the Prodigal Son gospel in the REB version, which made it sound very contemporary. (On the Argo recording of Kings DW reads from KJV, making words like 'belly' and 'swine' sound almost respectable. Classic!)
Beautiful, setting Lent off in appropriate penitential style.

Wish the Byrd anthem had been given a bit more shape. I kept thinking I wonder what GG would have done with those long plangent lines in treble and alto. Hmm.
Ahem..............John's Choir in far better nick than their near neighbours in a recent CE, IMO.

I only listened on an iphone without headphones whilst abroad (via 'data', not wifi) but what came over was a very fine choir, on top of its form, producing a most musical Ash Weds CE.
