ps I like "St.Ludmila": "Gospodiy Pomiluniy" (or whatever transliteration you prefer) is one of his jolliest choruses.

pps I think your third sentence might contain a non-sequitur. Love of one does not preclude caring about what Dvorak said, with or without airborne fruit.

Poulenc had a dry wit. He attended all the early productions of Dialogues des Carmelites and mused on the difficulties of achieving the effect of the guillotine, even though he had scored it carefully for the percussionists. In London it was too feeble, in New York too loud, in Hamburg too wooden. They always got it right in Paris! (My paraphrase - my google skills have not yet discovered the original).

Pretty well-prepared and disciplined all round. Big voices, but balanced.
Ps78 is a behemoth but was sure-footedly negotiated without fuss or much falter.

I was commenting on the distance away he seemed to have been placed by the balance, not on his character, devotion, pitch, attention to detail etc etc.
